It seems like a good enough time to take stock - of wrinkles and dreams amongst other things. And finally, to realize after 25 years of convincing myself and everyone else otherwise - I really have NO IDEA what's next. But I'm braver than I thought I'd be, more patient too. I'm as wise as anyone my age has the right to be, and more accepting of the fact that I will forever be a student of life. What more could a person want? (Except, maybe, some bomb-ass wrinkle fighting cream.)

Hairy Hijabs

I've recently moved to Dearborn, specifically East Dearborn, a city known for having the largest concentration of Middle Eastern cultures this side of the Atlantic. I'm finding myself mesmerized by the way the women sashay down the sidewalks in their burqas and hijabs on ninety degree days, a bag of groceries on one hip, a kid on the other. There's something about them that is so mysterious. Feminine. Secretive. Strong. Especially compared to the silly white chicks sitting at the bus stops, flicking cigarette ashes on their short shorts and halter tops.

I wonder if they remember to take the batteries out of smoke detectors when they abandon a building...

So the beep beep beeping of my drained little smoke detectors (four, count them four) on some subliminal level probably evoked this building sense of urgency. Like a timer ticking.

A lot of my habits were broken in May.

This was not one of them.

Inspired by every knock-kneed drunk bitch in platform stiletto heels.

The new studio space should be set up by the end of the month. Expect some finished works this fall.

We've been "Kraken" jokes about what on earth our new "Krak'en Coke" Sunday night special at Bailey's could possibly be. I was betting on another disgusting bottled concoction being pushed by one of our liquor reps. (For example, Tito's Vodka, or Effen Vodka, ever heard of them?) I'm eating my words....

I walked in last Saturday to find this gem sitting on the counter. The bottle is BEAUTIFUL. It's label has the look and feel of a letter pressed print, though no matter how hard I look at it, or google it, I can't figure out if its the real deal or some fancy ink-jetting. Being unable to access any kind of screen printing set-up, let alone find the space to start putting together one of my own, i decided it was time to start fiddling around digitally to see what i could do...
The tri tone filter in photoshop seemed to be moving me in the right direction.

But I'm feeling seriously let down with how a full color version turned out.

Not digging the texture, or my clean fingernails...
Any tips?

And yep, the pink elephant belongs to me. I've been experimenting with encaustic methods over the past few months as a means to keep my artistic ADD at bay. Nothing keeps me more focused than attempting to conquer something new. Believe it or not, painting with wax lends itself well to my limited (read: NON-EXISTENT) studio space and time constraints. I can stop or start painting at the turn of a griddle knob! And get this, I can just leave my brushes in the wax! AMAZING!!

Fashion, music, art, etc. are being lumped into this great big middle ground-above all- neutral and broadly appealing to the masses, dictated by the market.

There is something to be gained from an artist surrounding themselves with other artists. There is a camaraderie. A comfort. In all honesty, it makes me feel a little less weird from time to time. In the end however, i find myself enjoying spending more and more of my time with cooks, raging alcoholics, car mechanics and bar flies. There is something so honest about the people who are lucky enough to escape the confines of their own head. Make do with the 'doing' of life. For the most part I think I adore them out of sheer jealousy alone.

I am no longer a resident of detroit (not that i ever legally was). I no longer have studio space. I no longer wake up and sit at my work table, cup of coffee in hand, and just enjoy having everything i felt that i needed to create right in front of me.

It was eeeeaaaasy (not really ever that easy in the heat of the moment).

And with what remains of my studio shoved in closets, under beds, and being used temporarily as a beer pong table, I, without knowing it (though i knew it, dammit, i knew) conceded to the fact that a break from 'creation' was inevitable.

And then a friend showed me this--

air and light and time and space

I'm working on a book.

Meet Libitina.
This is one of the initial inked drawings ready to take to the screen. I'm planning on doing all of the illustrations via two-color screenprints. If time permits, there may be some vandercook action with hand-set type, and maybe some lino-cut prints for patterned end pages. And then, hand-binding! Woo!

I'm having a hard time putting this stuff down to work on my other projects.

I've been playing around with my vantage point of the figures in my paintings. The past couple of paintings I've done have incorporated full figures, smaller, and more dependent on their environment. I'm not really comfortable with these types of compositions yet, but then again, comfort zones can be deadly.

A pair of sore hamstrings and stiff triceps earned me this--the first edition from my screen printing class this semester. Abstract image. Four screens using the cut-out, filler, and fluid and filler methods.

I'm sure the pattern looks a bit familiar, but I've come to find that when i am using a new process, its easier for me to recycle some of my imagery so that i can focus on mastering the technical aspects.

This is what i intended for it to look like.

And this is my happy accident (which i like much better).

When I was younger, 2008 seemed so far away - considering, that in this upcoming year, (god-willing) I'll finally be a college graduate. I've realized, I have a lot to do before becoming a full fledged grown up. I've always thought new year's resolutions were silly and far too overwhelming.
Therefore. I've decided to trick myself, take baby steps, and throw together a to do list.

1. Partake in as many adrenaline inducing, health risking, down right dangerous activities as possible before my health insurance lapses.
2. Really (really) learn to live without cable television.
3. Rid myself completely of my fear of sketchbooks.
4. Learn the importance of cleaning brushes.
5. Enjoy every last second of my time at CCS and what it has left to offer me.
6. Subject myself to some gut-wrenching collaborative work.
7. Convince myself that a 9 a.m. screenprinting class is far more important to me than sleeping in.
8. Refresh my memory as to what morning even looks like.
9. Do more life-drawing. Christian Slade kicked my ass.
10. Get real studio space, (no more dining room painting for me), with a person or two who are capable of an amazingly symbiotic creative relationship.

Wish me luck.

There's something absolutely jaw dropping to the off-kilter frames, faded colors, stark figures. Amazing. The beautiful blonde is my mom, the brunette my grandmother, and the man my grandfather.
And I'm sorry, but digital photos ain't got nothing on these. I'm feeling inspired to try my hand at some digital collage work a 'la Eduardo. We'll see.

(Lack Of) Communication

People text. E-mail. Instant Message. Teleconference. Communicate mostly in Myspace messages. This list goes on.

Technology has allowed us to eliminate personal communication entirely. Being the social beings that we are, I doubt this can be good. Convenient sure. And less crippling to those with social anxieties. But still not good, nonetheless.

It doesn't sit well with me.
Here's the illustration that resulted.

And here's some detail shots.

Crows symbolize communication. They also symbolize tragedy.
I chose to use the tin cans and string because they are an obviously poor and inferior way to communicate.
The scissors indicate an imminent disconnect.

I've always been really into social/philosophical issues. So much so, that I actually read books on the stuff for fun, which lead me to my most recent read, Freedom Evolves, by Daniel C. Dennett. The author delves into the scientific and philosphical discourse on the existence of souls-including analogies involving avocadoes, artichokes, and even robots.

Which leads me to my next piece(s) for studio. Below is my initial sketch for the first piece.

The following are a few samples from Kenichi Hoshine done during a collaboration between him and James Jean - A Polite Winter.

Pretty stuff.

Makes me want to use more figurative work in my paintings, explore how to incorporate whimsical imagery with serious themes. All the while avoiding the phrase, as Lee says, "cute as hell". Experimenting with flat form and texture has been fun, but not quite right. Not that I intend to eliminate these stylistic elements, but supplement them. There's something missing.

Sometimes its funny to me how artistic progress seems to be a whole lot of two-stepping forward and baby steps back.

He called Obama a white man. He preaches old school victimology to the african american community. He wears the self-proclaimed "negro crown". He pushes his ideals onto the next gen of political figures and slanders them beyond recognition if they don't do as he says.

My initial concept for the piece focused mainly the incident down in Jena, Louisiana-nooses, KKK masks, the whole nine. Yeah. Hmmmm. No.

After some additional research, (and having a teacher ask me what the hell i was doing--thank you Don), I re-did my whole concept with much better results.

Stylistically its a bit of a departure from what i usually do. See?

But i like it.

Senior Studio Update

So, apparently people are burying statues of St. Joseph
upside down in their front lawn with the hopes that it
will help them sell their house. You can purchase such statues
online at www.catholicsupply.com for $6.95 plus shipping and
handling. With homes sales at a five year low, these little
buggers are selling like hot-cakes.

Sigh. The Capitalization of religion. Makes me all warm and fuzzy.

I'm usually pretty horrible at keeping track of the names
of my favorite illustrators. I try, I do, really. But I'm more
or less the kinda girl who keeps random clippings from
the Illustration magazines and annuals (no magazine is
safe with me. snip. snip.) with no clue who they belong to.

But, thanks to a guy I know, one has been identified.

Last week i did my first gocco prints.

A M A Z I N G

It was fun in a way that painting hasn't been for a while.
In a happy accidents kind of way.
This independent study is going to be a blast.
I've posted a few of the prints i did below.

For whatever reason, a lot of my work lately has involved
religious symbols. (Strange, since i am not a religious
person.)

I've been tossing around the idea of putting together
a large body of work on the capitalization of religion for
a gallery installation titled -

"we're not talking capital G's"

Maybe. Hopefully.

I'll be posting my first piece from senior studio as soon as
its dry enough to be scanned. Something about Saint Joseph
and a five year low in home sales. Fun stuff.
